The regenerative therapy practice is now accepting new patient applications from sufferers of chronic pain and inflammation caused by connective tissue disorders. They will develop treatment plans that use low-dose ketamine infusions to alleviate chronic pain symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, lupus, and GPA (Granulomatosis with polyangiitis).

The announcement responds to the increasing popularity of the use of ketamine for managing the pain caused by connective tissue disorders. Interventional Orthopedics of Washington administers the medicine through intramuscular injections and intravenous infusions.
Connective tissue disorders encapsulate a number of conditions in which the collagen and elastin comprising the skin and ligaments are damaged. This can cause issues in the bones, joints, skin, heart, and lungs, which may manifest as pain, swelling, fatigue, and numbness. The practice’s ketamine therapy plans work by blocking the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors, helping the body manage pain and acting as a mood-boosting agent.
The Interventional Orthopedics team will begin by evaluating the patient’s medical and psychiatric history to determine whether ketamine therapy is the appropriate treatment option in their case. Patients who have cardiovascular issues, are pregnant, or have had a negative reaction to anesthetic ketamine in the past are not eligible for the treatment.
The practitioners will discuss what can be expected during and after the treatment. Some patients, for example, report mild anesthetic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, and, in fewer cases, psychedelic effects lasting up to three hours. With continued use, the benefits on mental and physical health can be cumulative.
Interventional Orthopedics of Washington also uses ketamine therapy to treat anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD, as well as helping patients manage the symptoms of fibromyalgia and other neuropathic pain disorders. In a 2022 study, a large proportion of sufferers of neuropathic conditions such as fibromyalgia reported that their pain intensity had decreased significantly for a year after they underwent ketamine therapy.
