Columbus, United States, October 26, 2026 -- COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 26, 2026 — Yvonne Judge, IMFT-S, a licensed marriage and family therapist, highly trained couples counselor, Certified EMDR Therapist and founder of Revitalize You in Columbus, Ohio, is conducting doctoral research at National University exploring how Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy affects family relationships.

The research examines how people experience changes in their family relationships following individual EMDR therapy.

Why Study the Effects of EMDR Therapy on Family Relationships?

EMDR therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach widely used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related difficulties. Research has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing PTSD symptoms, but questions remain about how individual trauma treatment may influence the person's relationships.

When a person receives treatment for trauma there may be changes in emotional responses, behavior, and interpersonal interactions. These individual changes have the potential to echo through their relationships.

Understanding these possible effects is important because family relationships can play a significant role in psychological well-being.

The study does not assume that EMDR improves or damages family relationships. Instead, it examines participants' experiences to better understand the relationship between individual trauma therapy and family dynamics.

Examining EMDR Through a Family Systems Perspective

As an independent marriage and family therapist, Judge approaches trauma treatment with an understanding of family systems theory.

Family systems theory recognizes that people are interconnected and that changes in one family member may influence relationships and interaction patterns throughout the family.

Individual psychotherapy typically focuses on the experiences and symptoms of the person receiving treatment. Family systems research considers how individual changes may interact with broader relationship patterns.

By examining EMDR therapy through this perspective, Judge's doctoral research connects two important areas of mental health care: trauma treatment and family relationships.

The findings may help identify areas for future research and contribute to ongoing discussions about the possible relational effects of individual psychotherapy.

Why This Research Matters to Mental Health Professionals

Mental health professionals increasingly recognize the importance of considering both individual psychological symptoms and the relationships in which people live.

For therapists who provide EMDR, couples counseling, and family therapy, understanding the potential connection between trauma recovery and family dynamics may offer additional insights into treatment experiences. It may also affect how clinicians provide informed consent to their individual EMDR clients.

Judge's research focuses on the perspectives of individuals who have received EMDR therapy rather than measuring treatment effectiveness or establishing cause and effect.

This distinction is important because changes in family relationships can have multiple explanations, and individual experiences do not necessarily establish that a particular treatment caused those changes.

The research may contribute to a more complete understanding of how individual trauma treatment intersects with relationships and family systems.
