London, Dec 17, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Marking the return of London label Ruff DnB after a five-year hiatus, long-standing signees Indivision return with the Tricky Business EP. Having worked on early, career-defining releases by the likes of Macky Gee and Levela, Ruff has quietly commanded the respect of many in the scene and is now back in full force.
With an impressive set of drum and bass credentials already under their belt including millions of streams, releases on Toolroom and Liquicity, and support from key tastemakers including René LaVice, Netsky and London Elektricity, Indivision have become one of their country's most decorated musical exports, and continue to demonstrate why this is the case over the course of the new EP.
The Estonian DJ/production outfit kick off the new project by self-assuredly showcasing their signature sound: tranquil liquid. The EP's opener and title track, "Tricky Business", combines twinkling piano melodies with jubilant brass and gentle basslines to make for a feel-good roller. From then on, however, things take a slightly different turn. "Passing Low" opens with tender ambiance and swelling foley samples, but quickly introduces jagged, rumbling basslines into the mix, creeping into dark, experimental pastures.
"Psychopath" is yet another example of the Tallinn talents' versatility across the drum and bass spectrum. Drawing clear inspiration from techstep's formative years, the brooding stepper utilises punchy sub-bass, clanking percussion and garbled, mechanical synth work to create one of the group's most intense productions to date. Concluding the EP with flair, they showcase the raw, soulful vocals of MC Fava on "Out of This". The dreamy concoction makes use of serene strings and stuttering drum programming, resulting in a downtempo departure from the genre's typical conventions.
