New Delhi, Dec 13, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - On Universal Health Coverage Day, the International Institute for Human Development, India (IIHD India) organized a virtual community debate on how to protect everyone from the global COVID19 pandemic while ensuring health for all. Witnessed by people across self-help groups, volunteers, civil society organizations, patient organizations, and members of panchayat raj institutions (local governance).
The debate flagged some of the key aspects ranging from awareness to healthcare access issues perceived and prevalent in the community across different age groups, gender, and socio-economic status. Largely an issue of information and education is highlighted which helps people to seek care based on the availability of resources at the time of need.
Dr. Ruchi Sogarwal, CEO, IIHD India said, "People's reluctance towards preventive care, unawareness about their own infected status, and social-stigma amongst the diagnosed and recovered patients are the most influencing determinants affecting the mission of protects everyone from pandemic at the grass-root level".
During the occasion, the IIHD India team have also interacted with some of the senior government officials. One of the senior officials mentioned, "We should sustain the good hygiene practices that COVID 19 has resurfaced for larger community protection, not only to protect from the current pandemic but also from other respiratory infections".
The debate recommended that government policies should take into account the community's needs on a regular and consistent basis so that the resulting solution will be more effective. The pandemic has given the window to revisit healthcare priorities, investments, and resources.
