Most of the time, household floor cleaners are not seen as pollutants. However, most common floor cleaners are harmful to the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency names nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia as “Volatile Organic Compounds”, the worst environmental hazards in floor cleaners.
Nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia are dangerous water pollutants, especially in large quantities. They are flushed down drains and toilets as homes get cleaned. Water treatment facilities do clean the water before it is deposited into waterways however, the bad news is that these three chemicals are not removed during the water cleaning process undertaken by the water treatment facility.
Nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia are fertilizers used in farming to support plant growth. When those chemicals enter lakes, streams, and waterways, they end up feeding and causing the explosive growth of certain types of plants. This causes extreme clogging of waterways thereby crowding out and eventually killing animal life and other marine plants.
“Nitrogen in our water, in the form of nitrate-nitrogen, can be lethal to life in our waterways. Unnaturally high doses of nitrogen in our streams, lakes, and bays can trigger an imbalance in the ecosystem with drastic consequences,” reports the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay
“We understand the problems that these chemicals from mop wastewater can cause to the environment,” said Brian from Temples Pride, the creator of the Dredge microfiber mop kit. “Which is one of the reasons why using a flat microfiber mop, instead of the traditional style cotton loop mop and bucket, is a good idea. According to a study done by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one of the biggest benefits of using microfiber mops is that they use 95% less water and chemicals.
